MDUK and Changing Places were approached to work in partnership with the DfT and administer a DfT funded CPT installation programme across the Motorway network. This was formalised in November 2018, and a funding competition was launched to enable Motorway Service Operators to acquire match funding for the construction of CPTs. We assessed funding applications, issued grant funding, and closely followed each individual project. The programme commenced in 2019, with the 54th installation completed in October 2024. The delivery of the capital funding was part of the commitment set out in the DfT’s Inclusive Transport Strategy.
Roadchef, Welcome Break, Moto and Westmorland have all installed match funded Changing Places toilets. Very recently the Changing Places team has visited each of these locations to ensure that the facilities are fit for purpose and being maintained. The latest images captured during those visits are found attached to each individual site found on the find a CPT and the Journey Planner.
In 2020 the DfT approached MDUK/Changing Places to scope a similar project to that of the MSAs to other areas of the transport network in England. Valuable insight work was undertaken to identify strategic locations and make grant funding available to operators across the wider transport network, and for which installations across the rail network were highlighted as a primary need. A competition working in collaboration with Network Rail. The programme will see the installation of 6 CPTs at rail locations completed by 31st March 2025. These are located at Margate (SouthEastern) Cleethorpes and Stalybridge (TransPennine), Audley End and Great Yarmouth (Greater Anglia), and Liverpool Lime Street (Network Rail).
